I first met Laura while I was a post-doctoral student and her medical case was being presented in front of a group of doctors who were planning some revolutionary surgery on her at the time. Years later when I became a TV news reporter, I did a story on her and her condition. Decades later, she contacted me after seeing me interviewed on a TV show. She told me how the segment I did about her years ago had a great impact on her life and helped her with her self-esteem.
She said she was moving to Los Angeles to take care of her ailing father and wanted to get together with me and meet her husband. I met and spent some time with them. I was not only taken by the fact that this man could overlook Laura’s physical appearance but by the true and beautiful love they had for one another. I witnessed the respect, admiration, kindness, and caring, they shared with one another as I could feel their love just by being in their presence.
As a filmmaker, I wanted to share that experience with the world. If more couples treated one another like John and Laura, there would be fewer divorces. I also wanted to share this story to show that in this world where there is so much hopelessness, there is indeed hope. Laura represents everyone who has ever been teased or bullied or who has felt insecure or unsure of her looks and abilities.
Laura represents everyone who wonders if they could ever go on in life. Her story shows us how having faith and not giving up can make miracles happen- especially when it comes to love.
